Exterior Painting - What To Expect

Estimation

How are exterior estimates calculated?

Exterior estimates have many factors involved in the estimation process.

  • Siding and trim type

  • Height of the structure

  • Complexities around the project (exterior grade, trees, power lines, etc)

  • Amount of windows and doors

  • Ability to walk the roof (pitch)

Just like interior estimates, we require exterior dimensions as well. Fortunately the base dimensions are available to us. Between the county auditor and Google Earth, we can determine the footprint of your structure. We also will determine the height. This is an average height per side. The two numbers together give us the square footage of paintable space on your project.

In Person Estimates

A team member will schedule a time to visit your home or business. We will walk the project with you, and take photos of all sides of your home or business.

Remote Estimates

Remote estimates can be completed over the phone or via email. Give us a call at 614-834-9612 or contactus@intpainting.com to get the process started! We will need clear photos of all sides of your home or business.

Ready To Move Forward

That's awesome! We can't wait to complete this project with you! Reach out to our team to get on the schedule. We do not require any money up front to get on the schedule.

Scheduling

Our schedule is put together based upon weather and work load. We can provide a rough start date when more than a month out. Once we get one to two weeks out, we will reach out to provide you with a firm start date. If that date doesn't work for your situation, let us know! We can almost always shift our schedule around.

Before We Start

You've committed to completing your project, now what?

Colors

Colors can be selected up until about 5 days before your project starts. When selecting a color, pick anything from the local retailer. We need the color name, color code and color manufacturer.

Please remember to consult with your HOA or historical district office (if applicable). The two may define a predetermined list of colors or permits required to complete your project.

Your Prep Work

Exterior prep work is discussed during the estimation process. Each home or business is different, and may require different steps. At a high level, take a look at the following items

  • Move potted plants

  • Remove any trash laying near the foundation of your home or business

  • Many times gardening takes place ahead of us. This may be to remove unwanted plants, trim bushes, or remove vines from the structure.

Our Prep Work

Our team will move all patio furniture, grills, or benches. We also trim trees and bushes as needed with your permission.

We will cover all delicate plants in flowerbeds. Bushes and plants close to the home that will not be trimmed will be pulled back with a drop cloth on a daily basis (removed each night).

During The Process

Coverage

Our team starts by protecting all exterior items around your home. This may consist of drop clothes, plastic, tape, or spray shields.

Access

Our team utilizes ladders, lifts and scaffolding to complete your exterior project. While we do leave everything out of the way, these items may be hazards for animals and children.

Our team commonly utilizes a tracked lift. This lift leaves little to no damage to the yard, but is quite large. It also commonly makes beeping noises while in use. Please stay clear of it while in use.

Spray or brush and roll?

This is all dependent on the project and the weather conditions. The following factors come into play

  • Wind - If the wind is too strong, we will not attempt to spray

  • Product - Some products carry a LONG way in the wind. Solid color stains and oil based products tend to be the worst. We stay away from spraying these unless we are completely certain they will not carry to unwanted areas

  • Surface type - Depending upon the surface we may spray over brushing and rolling. For example, any time metal or aluminum siding is involved we will spray to ensure an even finish. Some surfaces are both sprayed and back rolled. An example of this surface type would be stucco.

Priming

Priming is done on an as needed basis. Below are some of the reasons priming takes place. This portion will be listed on your estimate.

  • Coverage - Have a water stain or iron deposit on the surface? Primer is required to seal that color back.

  • Prior applications - If the surfaces were painted with oil based paints, primer is required to appropriately cover.

  • Raw products - If we are painting over raw wood or glass a primer is required to ensure appropriate bond.

Paint and primer all in one products are great, but do not cover all applications. We utilize paint and primer in one products to go over existing painted surfaces (non oil based).

Finishing Coat

After any additional repairs have been completed (wood replacement, crack repairs etc.), we add a second coat of paint, then assess that you have complete and consistent coverage. Our quotes are coat to coverage, meaning that we will apply additional coats at no cost to you until we feel the coverage is correct.

Clean Up

At the end of each day on your job we will leave our items organized and out of the way. Once the job is finished we remove all protective coverings. We reinstall all items removed during the process, and place all yard items back where we found them. Ask us about taking extra paint you need to get rid of, even if it wasn't part of our project!

Interior Painting - What should I Expect?

Invoicing

Invoice Terms

After we finish the project, and do a final job walk with you, we issue an invoice. The invoice is due 14 days from that point. Terms and conditions can be negotiated during the estimation process. If you need to extend out past 14 days, please let us know!

What happens if additional touch ups are required

Should anything arise during that 14 day period, reach out to us a soon as possible. Our team members will address any issues that arise. If the repairs are not able to be addressed before the end of the 14 day period, don't worry! We will extend the due date until our work is complete.
